Evaluation of Bioluminescence Bioreporters for Sensing Organic Contaminants in an Enclosed Habitat
This is a collaborative effort with University of Tennessee (UT) and NASA JPL. The objective is to develop a suite of microelectronic-based bioluminescent biosensors for the specific detection and identification of deleterious volatile compounds in the spacecraft environment. The biosensors represent a biologically inspired sensing mechanism that takes advantage of self-generated lux-based bioluminescence for rapid, early warning monitoring of target compounds within complex environmental matrices. UT team is working on the construction of bioreporters for sensing formaldehyde and dichloromethane as well as a prototype of bioluminescent bioreporter integrated circuit (BBIC) in collaboration with NASA JPL. The KSC team is evaluating the performance of both bioreporters and BBIC in terms of linearity, sensitivity and reproducibility of bioreporter responses, as well as the impact of environmental conditions on their performance.
