Ecological Programs
Kennedy Space Center Ecological Programs The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), at Kennedy Space Center (KSC), has developed and implemented the pro-active Ecological Program to address current and future environmental issues associated with Spaceport operations. The program strives to anticipate and deal comprehensively with regulatory and environmental stewardship concerns at KSC. The approach represents a high level of commitment by NASA and includes frequent interaction with other agencies and organizations concerned with environmental and ecosystem management issues at local, regional, and national levels. Program implementation during the last two decades has led to development of an in-house capability with considerable credibility within the scientific and regulatory communities, enhancing program acceptance. Numerous organizations and agencies are involved directly and indirectly with management of lands and waters surrounding the 140,000 acres that comprise KSC. However, as the land owner, NASA has the primary responsibility for ensuring all activities are conducted in accordance with federal, state, and local environmental laws and regulations. Information collected by the Ecological Program is utilized to fulfill these requirements while providing input for a wide variety of natural resource management decisions.
