Operations support activities include defining environmental impacts resultingfrom construction and operation of facilities or systems. During the
planning stages of new activities at KSC, the Ecological Program's predictive and field assessment capabilities provide information to the
Environmental Program Branch (EPB) and others for use in facility sightings and the development of environmental documentation such as construction
permits, discharge permits, ecological risk assessments, Environmental Assessments (EA), and, with large projects, Environmental Impact Statements
(EIS). Once new activities are initiated, activities are directed to determine if impact projections made in the EA are appropriate. Support is
provided directly to the EPB Remediation Group activities.
The Ecological Program provides spatial information in the form of Geographic Information System (GIS) maps and products to the Remediation Program and
its contractors for use in site definition, assessment, planning, and documentation. Support is provided to the EPB Air Permitting Group to develop and
manage information related to Title V of the Clean Air Act. Support is also provided to the KSC based NASA Principal Center for Recycling and
Affirmative Procurement. This group provides oversight and support to all NASA Centers with regard to recycling and the procurement of environmentally
friendly products. Their goal is to minimize environmental impacts associated with the production, use, and disposal of products.
